Château de Chamirey is the estate that put Mercurey on the map for serious Burgundy drinkers, and it shares its ownership story with two other domaines already in our range: Domaine des Perdrix in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Domaine de la Ferté in Givry. All three belong to the Devillard family, whose roots in Mercurey trace back to the 12th century.
From Marquis to Family Estate
The château itself dates to the early 18th century, originally held by the Dupaty de Clam family before passing to the Marquis de Jouennes d'Herville family. The Marquis de Jouennes acquired the estate in 1932 and, in 1934, became the first producer in Mercurey to bottle wine at the estate rather than selling it in bulk to négociants, a decision that set the château apart from the start. His son-in-law, Bertrand Devillard, later took over and expanded the holdings to their current size. Today the estate is run by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the Marquis's grandchildren and the fifth generation of the Devillard winemaking family.
Mercurey: The Côte Chalonnaise's Leading Village
Mercurey is the largest and arguably most consistent appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, the stretch of Burgundy south of the Côte de Beaune that has long offered strong quality at a more accessible price than its more famous northern neighbours. Château de Chamirey's 37.7 hectares, including 8.5 hectares of Premier Cru and 3.3 hectares of monopole vineyards, make it the appellation's largest and most influential single estate.
