Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Pessac-Leognan

The Domain

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive and sought-after estates, located in Pessac-Léognan, just outside the city of Bordeaux. With origins dating back to the 16th century, the estate occupies a rare urban vineyard shaped by gravel, clay, and limestone soils, bordered by the Peugue stream.

Owned by Patrice Pichet and led by renowned winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, Les Carmes Haut-Brion has established a singular identity within Bordeaux, combining heritage with a bold, contemporary vision. The vineyard is unusually planted with a high proportion of Cabernet Franc, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a varietal mix that defines the château’s aromatic finesse, freshness, and complexity.

The Style

Viticulture is carried out with extreme precision, with a strong focus on organic and biodynamic principles, low yields, and meticulous parcel management. In the cellar, winemaking is highly innovative yet restrained, including whole-cluster fermentations and gentle extractions. Ageing takes place in a combination of oak barrels, large foudres, and amphorae, enhancing texture and depth while preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression.

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion produces wines of remarkable elegance, energy, and ageing potential — modern Bordeaux that combine precision, tension, and intellectual depth. Revered by collectors, sommeliers, and critics worldwide, the estate is today considered one of the leading references of Pessac-Léognan.
