Château Ausone

Saint-Emilion

The Domain

Château Ausone is one of the most historic and revered estates of Saint-Émilion. Its name derives from Decimus Magnus Ausonius, a 4th-century Roman poet and statesman who is believed to have owned vineyards on this exceptional limestone hillside overlooking the Dordogne valley.

The modern history of Ausone is inseparable from the Vauthier family, who have overseen the estate since the late 19th century. Through generations, the family preserved Ausone’s identity as a small, uncompromising, and terroir-driven property. In 1955, Ausone was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé A, a status it retained until its voluntary withdrawal from the Saint-Émilion classification in 2021—an assertion of independence rather than a retreat from excellence.

With just around 7 hectares under vine, Ausone is one of the smallest estates among Bordeaux’s elite, reinforcing its rarity and cult status.

The Style

Château Ausone stands apart as a timeless expression of limestone terroir, combining Roman heritage, family stewardship, and a singular stylistic identity. It is not a wine that seeks to impress instantly, but one that defines greatness through restraint, depth, and enduring elegance.
