There are family names in Burgundy that carry genuine authority, not because of marketing, but because of decades of quietly exceptional work in the vineyard and the cellar. The Devillard family is one of them. Across four estates spanning the Côte de Nuits, the Côte Chalonnaise, and the Mâconnais, they have built a portfolio that covers Burgundy from north to south, from grand cru to entry-level, without ever compromising on what matters most: terroir honesty.
This month, we are putting three of their domaines in the spotlight — Domaine des Perdrix, Château de Chamirey, and Domaine de la Garenne — and giving you the full picture of why these estates belong on your radar, and on your shelf.
The Devillard Family, A Burgundian Institution
For generations, the Devillard family has been shaping what Burgundy looks like at its most authentic. Their approach is rooted in something the region's greatest producers have always understood: that the winemaker's job is not to impose, but to reveal. Terroir expertise, precision in the vineyard, and a deep fluency in Burgundian tradition are the foundations on which every one of their estates is built.
They currently own and manage four domaines: Domaine des Perdrix in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Château de Chamirey in Mercurey, Domaine de la Garenne in the Mâconnais, and Domaine de la Ferté in Givry. Together, these four addresses offer one of the most complete and coherent expressions of Burgundy available from a single family.
Domaine des Perdrix — Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Devillards took over Domaine des Perdrix in 1996, and what has followed is a story of sustained, serious investment. More than half of the estate's vineyards are now classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru — a figure that speaks to both the quality of the land and the family's commitment to working it to its full potential. Their holdings include sites in Échezeaux at grand cru level, one of the most coveted appellations in all of Burgundy.
What distinguishes Perdrix is the rigour applied at every stage. Grapes are harvested only at perfect maturity — a discipline that sounds obvious but is, in practice, one of the hardest calls a vigneron makes each year. From there, the wines are vinified with care and aged for approximately 18 months in oak before bottling. The result is wines that preserve the purity and individual expression of each site rather than being shaped by a single stylistic agenda.
The reds from Perdrix are deeply coloured, structured, and built with the kind of tannic backbone that needs time to resolve. These are cellar wines. Buy them now, yes — but plan to wait. The patience will be rewarded.
Best for: Serious red Burgundy drinkers, anyone building a ten-year cellar.
Château de Chamirey — Mercurey, Côte Chalonnaise
Constructed in the 18th century on the hillsides above Mercurey, Château de Chamirey is not simply one of the appellation's finest estates, it is, by many measures, the benchmark against which Mercurey is judged. The Devillards have brought the same precision here that defines their work in the Côte de Nuits, with results that consistently exceed what the price point might suggest.
Mercurey sits in the Côte Chalonnaise, the stretch of Burgundy that runs south of Beaune and is still, relative to the Côte d'Or, significantly undervalued by the market. That undervaluation is, frankly, an opportunity. The terroir here, limestone soils, well-exposed slopes, a continental climate tempered by the influence of altitude — is capable of producing wines of real complexity and age-worthiness.
Château de Chamirey produces both reds and whites. The reds, from Pinot Noir, are elegant, structured, and far more serious than their modest price might suggest. The whites, from Chardonnay, are mineral, precise, and beautifully defined — classic Burgundy in the best sense of the phrase.
If you are looking for the quality of the Côte d'Or at a fraction of the price, Chamirey is the answer. This is the kind of wine we recommend without hesitation to customers who want to drink well every night, not just on special occasions.

Domaine de la Garenne — Mâconnais
The southernmost of the three estates, Domaine de la Garenne has a compelling origin story. Born in the village of Azé in the Mâconnais, the domaine was revived in 2008 by the Beaumont and Devillard families, a collaborative project that quickly attracted international attention for the quality of its Chardonnay.
And it is Chardonnay that defines this estate entirely. The Mâconnais is Chardonnay country: warmer, sunnier, and more generous than the Côte d'Or, with wines that tend toward roundness, brightness, and immediate drinkability. Domaine de la Garenne works the sunny slopes of the appellation to produce whites that are pure, expressive, and — critically — food-friendly in the way that great white Burgundy always is.
These are not simple wines dressed up in Burgundy's reputation. They have genuine depth and terroir character, rooted in limestone soils and careful viticulture. But they are also approachable, affordable, and utterly reliable at the table. A bottle of Garenne alongside a piece of fresh fish, a plate of charcuterie, or a well-made risotto is one of those small pleasures that reminds you why wine at this level is worth seeking out.
Best for: White Burgundy entry points, food pairing, everyday drinking at a serious quality level.
Three Domaines, One Family, One Philosophy
What unites these three estates, beyond the Devillard name, is a shared commitment to letting each terroir speak for itself. From the grand cru vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges to the sun-warmed slopes of the Mâconnais, the style shifts, the grape varieties differ, and the wines occupy very different price points. But the philosophy is consistent: work the land with precision, intervene as little as necessary, and bottle something that could not have come from anywhere else.
That is, in the end, what Burgundy is about. And the Devillard family, across four generations and four estates, is one of its most reliable custodians.
