Tasting notes
A vibrant and elegant Syrah with a nose of black fruits, crushed violets, and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate reveals silky tannins and refreshing acidity, unfolding into notes of dark berries, olive tapenade, and subtle smoked meat on the finish. A charming and expressive wine that punches well above its appellation.
More About The Winery
Domaine Pierre-Jean Villa is located in Chavanay in the Northern Rhône Valley, close to the prestigious appellations of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie. The estate is relatively young but has quickly become one of the most respected modern domaines in the region.
Pierre-Jean Villa grew up in a farming family in the Rhône Valley, although his parents did not own vineyards. His career in wine began in Burgundy, where he gained valuable experience working with renowned estates such as Clos de Tart and later Domaine de la Vougeraie, building a strong technical and commercial background in fine wine.
In 2003, he returned to his native Rhône and joined the celebrated trio Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard, and François Villard at Vins de Vienne, a project aimed at reviving historic vineyards around Seyssuel. After several years managing and developing the project, Villa decided to pursue his own vision.
He founded Domaine Pierre-Jean Villa in 2009, starting almost from scratch with a few parcels in Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Côte-Rôtie, and gradually expanding the estate. Today the domaine covers around 17–20 hectares spread across several Northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and the hillside vineyards of Seyssuel.
The vineyards are organically farmed, with a philosophy centered on respect for the land, biodiversity, and minimal intervention in the cellar. Villa focuses on expressing the individuality of each terroir, using careful vinification, indigenous yeasts, and gentle élevage to produce wines known for their precision, aromatic purity, and balance.
Today the estate remains a family-run domaine, with Pierre-Jean Villa joined by the next generation, continuing the work of crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines that reflect the diverse landscapes of the Northern Rhône.
