The debate between Champagne and Crémant is one that every serious KL wine buyer will
encounter eventually. Both are French sparkling wines made using the traditional method
(secondary fermentation in the bottle, producing fine persistent bubbles). The differences
and the value proposition, are worth understanding before your next purchase.
What Is Crémant?
Crémant is sparkling wine produced in France outside the Champagne region, using the same traditional method: primary fermentation, blending, secondary fermentation in bottle, riddling, and disgorgement. Unlike Prosecco (which ferments in tank) or generic sparkling wine, Crémant undergoes exactly the same labor-intensive process as Champagne.
France produces Crémant in multiple regions: Alsace, Burgundy (Crémant de Bourgogne), the Loire Valley, Limoux, and others. Each uses the local grape varieties, Pinot Blanc and
Auxerrois in Alsace, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Burgundy, Chenin Blanc in the Loire.
The Key Differences
Geography: Champagne can only come from the legally defined Champagne appellation in north-eastern France (primarily the Marne department). The chalk subsoil, cool climate, and specific grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) create a flavour profile that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Price: This is where Crémant wins decisively. Entry-level Champagne in KL starts around
RM250 to RM350. A high-quality Crémant d'Alsace from our range can be had for significantly less while delivering similar production methods and comparable drinking pleasure. For casual celebrations, the value argument for Crémant is compelling.
Flavour profile: Champagne from the Cotes des Blancs (especially Blanc de Blancs) has a
distinctive chalk minerality and fine bead that is hard to match. Crémant from Alsace tends to be slightly rounder, more aromatic, and broader-textured. Neither is better in absolute terms they suit different occasions and palates.
When to Choose Champagne
Choose Champagne when the occasion demands it: a proposal, a milestone birthday, a
significant business closing, or when gifting to someone who will appreciate the provenance. Champagne Delamotte, our entry-level Champagne choice, combines the cachet of the Salon-Delamotte estate with genuine quality that justifies the price premium.
For truly special moments, Champagne Salon '2013 S de Salon Blanc de Blancs' is available
exclusively at The Vintage Wine Club Malaysia in KL. There are few more meaningful bottles to open at a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
When to Choose Crémant
Choose Crémant for: pre-dinner aperitifs at home, everyday celebrations that do not require the full Champagne statement, pairing with lighter food courses, and bulk purchasing for corporate events where budget matters. Crémant's quality-to-price ratio is simply unbeatable.
From our Alsace producer Domaine Valentin Zusslin, we source certified biodynamic wines, a Crémant d'Alsace from this estate would offer both sparkling wine pleasure and the story of sustainable viticulture in one glass. Ask us about current Alsace sparkling availability via WhatsApp.
