Why Bottle Size Matters for Ageing
Larger bottles age more slowly and elegantly than standard 750ml bottles. The reason is the ratio of wine volume to the amount of oxygen that enters through the cork: as bottles get larger, this ratio improves, less oxygen exposure relative to the total wine volume. The result is a slower, more even maturation that tends to produce more complex, better-integrated flavours over time.
Sommelier wisdom holds that the ideal bottle size for long-term ageing is the Magnum (1.5 litres). The standard bottle ages reasonably well; smaller formats (half-bottles, 375ml) tend to age faster and less gracefully. For your most special bottles, the ones you plan to lay down for a decade or more, buying in Magnum format is the savvier choice.
The Main Bottle Sizes
Half Bottle (375ml): Half a standard bottle. Useful for solo dining or dessert wines. Ages faster, so drink relatively young.
Standard Bottle (750ml): The universal benchmark. One bottle serves four generous glasses or six conservative ones.
