Some of the best wine conversations happen not in formal tasting rooms or white-tablecloth dining rooms, but in relaxed, environments where the glasses are full, the company is good, and nobody is performing expertise. That is exactly what we had in mind when we conceived Thirsty Thursday, and on 3 July, we are opening our doors for the very first edition.
This is an evening of wine discovery at our Publika office. No fixed programme, no lecture format. Just a carefully chosen selection of bottles open and ready to pour, a room full of people who love wine, and the kind of conversation that tends to follow when both of those things are in the same place.
Château de Meursault — 'Clos du Château' White 2021 | Burgundy
Meursault is one of the great white Burgundy villages, rich, textured, and unmistakably itself. The Château de Meursault is one of the appellation's most historic estates, with a cellar that dates back to the 15th century and a track record of producing wines that define what Meursault can be at its finest. The 'Clos du Château' is the estate's home vineyard, surrounding the château itself, and it delivers exactly what you would hope for: a Chardonnay of weight, depth, and Burgundian authority. Expect notes of toasted hazelnut, ripe stone fruit, and the characteristic buttery richness that has made Meursault a benchmark for white wine lovers worldwide.
Château de Marsannay — Puligny-Montrachet 'Cuvée de Maizières' White 2020 | Burgundy
From the northern end of the Côte de Nuits to one of the most celebrated white wine addresses on earth: Puligny-Montrachet. Château de Marsannay has carved out a serious reputation for producing wines of precision and elegance across multiple appellations, and their Puligny is a fine example of what this village does better than almost anywhere else, a Chardonnay of mineral tension, citrus brightness, and that elusive quality of length that keeps you returning to the glass long after the sip has finished.
The 'Cuvée de Maizières' is a wine that rewards contemplation. Put it next to the Meursault and the contrast alone, same grape, same region, entirely different expression, is one of the most instructive comparisons in all of white, Burgundy.
Château Moutinot — Red 2021 | Bordeaux
A change of direction now, and a producer worth discovering. Château Moutinot brings a Bordeaux red to the evening, a wine rooted in the classic traditions of the region but with a freshness and approachability that makes it immediately engaging rather than austere. The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux was a year that rewarded producers who worked carefully in the vineyard, and Moutinot is precisely that kind of estate: attentive, rigorous, and focused on expressing their terroir rather than chasing a style. Expect the classic Bordeaux blend character, dark fruit, graphite, a touch of cedar, in a frame that is genuinely enjoyable to drink.
Château de Meursault — Pommard 'Clos de la Platière' Red 2020 | Burgundy
We return to Château de Meursault, this time for a red — and what a contrast it makes to the white. Pommard is Meursault's neighbour to the north, but in temperament it could not be more different: where Meursault is generous and round, Pommard is firm, structured, and built for the long haul. The 'Clos de la Platière' is one of the appellation's notable Premier Cru sites, and the 2020 vintage, a warm, concentrated year across Burgundy, produced wines of depth and power.
This is a Pinot Noir that commands the room. Dark cherry, iron, earth, and a tannic structure that tells you clearly this wine has years ahead of it. Tasting it now, at this evening, is an education in what Burgundy red can become.
Domaine Giudicelli — Patrimonio Red 2020 | Corsica
Of all the bottles on the table this evening, this may be the one that surprises you most.
Corsica remains one of the most underexplored fine wine regions in France, and Patrimonio, on the northern tip of the island, is its most serious appellation for red wine. Domaine Giudicelli is among the island's most respected producers, farming organically and working primarily with Nielluccio, on the ancient schist and limestone soils that give Patrimonio its distinctive mineral character.
The 2020 red is aromatic, structured, and genuinely singular. There is a wildness to Corsican wine, dried herbs, maquis, iron-rich earth, that you simply do not find on the mainland. If you have never explored what this island produces at the serious end of the spectrum, this bottle is your introduction. It tends to convert people immediately.
Domaine Grand Veneur — Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'Le Miocène' Red 2022 | Rhône Valley
We close the evening in the southern Rhône, with one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most compelling estates and a wine that carries the weight of some of the appellation's oldest soils.
Domaine Grand Veneur has been a benchmark producer in Châteauneuf for decades, and 'Le Miocène', named for the geological era in which its soils were formed — represents the estate at its most serious. A Grenache-dominant blend from old vines on ancient terroir, the 2022 shows the richness and warmth of the southern Rhône in a vintage of exceptional quality, balanced by the freshness and complexity that only old vine Grenache on ancient soils can provide.
This is a wine that fills the glass, the room, and the memory. A fitting way to end an evening of discovery.
An Evening Worth Your Thursday
Six wines. Six distinct expressions of what France does better than anywhere else in the world. From the mineral precision of white Burgundy to the sun-drenched depth of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a detour through Bordeaux and a Corsican discovery that may well be the talking point of the night, this is a line-up designed to educate, surprise, and, above all, give you something worth talking about.
Thirsty Thursday is free to attend and open to anyone who wants to explore wine in good company. No prior knowledge required. Curiosity is the only entry requirement.
